Penguins are flightless birds โ their wings evolved into powerful flippers for swimming instead. They're in the family Spheniscidae and are perfectly built for the water. They're not just good swimmers โ they're Olympic-level swimmers!

Penguins have a waterproof coat of densely-packed feathers โ up to 70 per square inch! They have a special oil gland that keeps feathers waterproof. Underwater, they can reach speeds of 15โ25 mph โ faster than most Olympic swimmers!

Smallest! Only 13 inches. Found in Australia & NZ.

Many penguin species are monogamous โ they return to the same mate year after year. They find each other in massive colonies using their unique calls. Reuniting after months apart is basically a penguin love story! ๐ฅน
Both parents share egg-sitting duties โ but Emperor penguin dads do the heavy lifting! While mom hunts at sea for 2+ months, dad keeps the egg warm on his feet, eating nothing, in -40ยฐF weather. Dad of the year, every year.
Baby penguins (called chicks) are born fluffy and gray. They need to stay warm under their parents' flap โ called a "brood pouch." Chicks huddle in groups called crรจches while parents hunt!
Once a year, penguins go through a "catastrophic molt" โ they lose ALL their feathers at once and grow new ones over 2-3 weeks. During this time they can't swim or hunt. They have to eat enough beforehand to survive!
Home to Emperor and Adรฉlie penguins โ the most famous penguin habitat. Temperatures can drop to -76ยฐF. The penguins don't mind โ their fluffy feathers are among the densest of any bird species.
Little Blue penguins live in Australia and New Zealand. African penguins live on the coast of South Africa. Humboldt penguins live in South America along the Pacific coast!
The Galรกpagos penguin lives right on the equator near Ecuador โ one of the warmest places on Earth! They survive thanks to cold ocean currents that bring cool water and fish to the islands.
