Meet the fuzzy little pollinators that help flowers bloom, fruit grow, and whole ecosystems keep humming along.
Bees are insects, which means they have six legs, three body parts, two antennae, and an outer shell called an exoskeleton. They are cousins of ants and wasps, but bees are the fuzzy flower specialists of the family.
When bees visit flowers for nectar and pollen, some pollen sticks to their hairy bodies. Then they carry it to the next flower. That helps plants make seeds and fruit. Apples, berries, almonds, pumpkins โ all rather grateful for bees.
Bees can see colours and patterns on flowers that humans often miss, including ultraviolet markings. Those hidden โlanding stripsโ help point them toward the nectar buffet.
Adult bees drink nectar, a sugary liquid made by flowers. Nectar is their quick energy fuel for flying, exploring, and buzzing home.
Bees also collect pollen, which is packed with protein and nutrients. Baby bees need it to grow, and worker bees pack it into little baskets on their legs.
Honey bees turn nectar into honey and store it in wax combs. That way the colony has food when flowers are scarce or winter arrives. Sensible planning, frankly.
The queen lays eggs and helps keep the colony going.
Worker bees clean, build wax comb, feed babies, guard the hive, and collect nectar.
Drones are male bees. Their main job is helping queens start new colonies.
Some worker bees spend part of their lives feeding baby bees in nursery cells.
Bees live on every continent except Antarctica. If a place has flowering plants, there is a fair chance some sort of bee is buzzing about nearby.
Some bees live in hives, some in hollow stems, some in little tunnels underground, and some in old wood. Not every bee wants the big hive lifestyle.
Bees can live in gardens, farms, forests, meadows, and even cities โ as long as there are flowers, water, and safe nesting spots.
